Today we left Norway and sailed from Bergen to Lerwick/Shetland. The weather during the passage was instable but with good wind from the south. This allowed us a fast sailing in the westerly direction. The passage took a bit more than 30h so we had to sail during the night, which isn’t completely dark in the northern part of Europe. The waves were unsteady and came from different directions that caused some tummy rumbling on board.  During the last week we had our friend Helmut with us to explore the islands south of Bergen. Unfortunately we had a lot of rain and we are happy now to escape the rain in Bergen to the Shetland Islands.

27.05.2017 Bulandet, north of Bergen

After we visited Herland and Åldevågen we arrived on the island of Burlandet. The Norwegian call this island Venice of Norway because it has numerous cannels and bridges. Interesting is this area especial because of the geology of this area. We could explore a nice Conglomerate and Greenstone beside each other.  The genesis is explained on a lot of boards. But the main attractions for us are two 180m high round conglomerate humps. The rock would be perfect for climbing but because it is very difficult to secure we just went up on the normal route to enjoy the fantastic view.

25.05.2017 Wandern/Hiking in Svanøyvika and Aldevågen

The next big city about 80 nautical miles north of Bergen is Florø. As we sail slowly into the harbor, we are  shocked at first. The last two month we have not seen as many boats in total. The marina is totally crowded because the annual boat show is on the agenda. In our hermitage of the past few weeks, we were not aware of this event. From simple motor boats for fishing, to solid motor yachts, everything is ready for review and purchase. Sailing boats are not available here. At first we moor our boat side by side to a  Danish sailing boat, but this place is so exposed to schwell from the outside, that  we took the chance to move NOE to an empty space at the bridge when a big motorboat was leaving. We immediately were aproached by visitors of the fair who want to have information about our boat because Noe has a really exceptional appearence. The after show party on the footbridge and in the surrounding pubs went to the early morning hours. At the next morning before the show started again we were off to explore the deserted islands south of Florø - the hermitage has been taken us back.

19.05.2017 Die alte Handelstation Rugsund - the old trading station of Rugsund

Fishing and trading has a long tradition in this area. The biggest village on this part of the coast during the 16th century was Rugsund. There was a kind of “shopping mall” with trading goods from many different countries existing.  The wobbly bridge gave us the impression that it was already built during that time too.

In Rugsund we met Andrea and Karsten with their boat “happy our”. We did not trade goods with them but shared helpful hints.

10.05.2017 Puffins in Runde

We start to prepare for the passage around Stad. Therefore we are sailing again to the bird island of Runde, which is the best place for the start of the passage.  During the next day we hike to the cliffs where the puffins nest. We know that the birds will come late in the evening. It is already 8 pm and there are no birds to see. Suddenly a huge number of birds is at once flying from the sea to their nesting area. The birds are not afraid of us and some of them land just two meters below us.

06.05.2017 Segeln im Geirangerfjord - sailing the Geirangerfjord

We finished our ski tour season. It is simply too risky, as the temperature reached 20 degrees Celsius and big avalanches were running down into the valleys during the day. We enjoyed the mountains by sailing through the fjords.  Originally we didn’t plan to sail into the Geirangerfjord as it is crowded during the season. Even our sailing guidebook wasn’t recommending a stay there as it is almost impossible to find a place for mooring the boat.  We were the only boat mooring and we were the only guests in the café in Geiranger .  And the fjord in this time of the year is even more impressive with the white snowy mountaintops.

After almost two weeks in Åndalsnes we continued sailing back to Molde. With a stop over in Ålesund, we were entering the Hjørundfjorden towards Sæbø, which is in the middle of the Sunnmøre Alps. The fjord was already two times rated by National Geographic as one of the world’s best travel destinations. It was almost surreal to for us to sail into the fjord with the fantastic mountain scenery with a steady tailwind.

28.04.2017 Radtour zu den Trollwänden - Bicycletour to the rock walls of Trolltinden

Today we made a cycling tour to the rock walls of Trolltinden and in direction of the Trollstigen. The walls of Trolltinden are almost 1700m high and are therefore one of the highest rock walls in Europe. Trollstigen is a famous and spectacular pass road. It is still closed until end of May due to snow and danger of avalanches. We were still able to cycle a few kilometers along the road to get an impression about the mountain scenery.

27.07.2017 Skitour auf den Skarven im Innfjorden - Ski trip on Skarven at the end of the Innfjorden

Today we cycle to the start of the ski tour. Originally we planned to ski the Skarven in the Innfjorden. We knew the tunnel to the starting point is closed for cyclists, but we were surprised that the old road along the fjord is also closed with a huge gate. We are lucky to have more choices in Romsdalen for ski touring, so we decided on short notice to cycle in the opposite direction to do the Skarven at the end of Isfjorden. We start our ski tour at lunch time; however, there is daylight in Åndalsnes already until 22:00 in the evening.

Time to edit the flight with the drone above the top of Nonstinden

We sailed through Romsdalsfjorden and Isfjorden to Åndalsnes to hide from the forcasted storm. The location is famous for the rock walls of Trolltindan and for the popular tourist attraction of Trollstigen. The weather came as predicted with lots of rain, snow and wind.

The past two days we spent ski touring with great weather and skiing conditions. We were lucky to have met Inka and Frode, who showed us the mountains of Romsdalen.  Even though you have a view of the Romsdale mountains-panorama from Molde, it is still a two hours drive by car to the start of the ski tours – through the tunnel under the Fannefjorden, with the Ferry across the Langfjorden and passing Åndalsnes. We planned to skitour up Nonstinden and Hesten, two mountains were we could start from Bøstølen. As our fitness did not exactly benefit from sitting on our sail boat we were quite exhausted after two days hiking 1250 meter  from the valley to the top. But as the weather stayed nice (it is very rarely different, as Frode said..) we decided to climb the famous Varden, a view point just behind Molde, on the third day.

A big "Thank You" to Inka and Frode for the unforgettable days we could spend with you.

15.04.2017 Trondheim - Molde

Held up by repairs in Trondheim, we only continued south on the 12.04. We made use of the good weather and wind conditions and sailed to Kongsvoll and on the next day to Ringholmen – a traditional trading location. We passed Kristiansund outside on the sea side and sailed through the dangerous Hustavista with only little wind to Bud. On the fourth day with perfect weather conditions we continued to Molde, the base for ski touring in Romsdalen.

07.04.2017 Trondheim

We arrived in Trondheim after a few days of sailing in stormy weather. The city welcomed us with nice sunshine and almost no wind. We started to explore the city with its beautiful places right away, as the weather forecast predicts strong winds and heavy rain for the next couple of days. The city center is only a ten minutes walk from the harbor. There are plenty of coffee bars where we can relax from the cold and stormy weather of the past week.

Finally we are sailing again! After almost 4 weeks of preparation and waiting for good weather conditions we are planning on starting today in the morning and heading south. The fact, that it snowed again during the night and in the morning the thermometer read -3 degrees Celcius, will not stop us form moving on. Our next stop is on the island of Leka, which is 30nm south of Brønnøysund.

25.03.2017

After 5 months onshore in Brønnøysund we putour boat back into the water today. Sigurd Siem from Smedvik Brygga and his crew did an excellent job. We were also able to measure the weight of our boat - the scale showed 14.5 tons.

05.03.2017

Today we rented a car and went inland to go on a ski tour. The temperatures here are much lower compared to the coast. In the car park the thermometer showed -14 degrees Celcius. On top of the mountain additional strong wind from the east made it much colder. The advantage of the low temperatures was the perfect powder snow for the downhill run.The region is not known for skitouring, therfore we were the only mountaineers who walked up the mountain today, even though it is Sunday.

04.03.2017

It is still winter in Norway with snow and low temperatures, therefore getting the boat into the water is currently not possible. So, after putting away our luggage, we decide to go on a ski tour – our first one in Norway.

01.03.2017

Today we arrived in Brønnøysund. The season 2017 has started. The boat is still covered with snow, however, it has survived the winter quite well. Our plans for our tour this year are not fixed yet in details but we will head south to Bergen and then cross the north sea to the Shettland Islands. There are many islands, mountains and rocks for climbing along the way. But first we have to get the boat in the water and prepare everything to be able to start. During the next days we are planning to do some ski alpinism in the area of Brønnøsund.
